Bird watching opportunities abound all around Tillamook Bay. One of them exists within the city limits of Garibaldi. A Great Blue Heron rookery is situated in a stand of spruce trees on the south and southwest facing hillside just below the city’s landmark G. According to state wildlife officials who monitor the site periodically, the rookery usually contains anywhere from 25 to 50 nests. The birds are year-round residents and, although they generally distance themselves from human activity, the rookery exists on the edge of a quiet residential neighborhood. Because the site is surrounded by private residential properties and rookeries are typically best observed from a distance anyway, the optimum viewing location is the south side of U.S. Hwy 101 near the Myrtlewood Factory.
